Kitimat River

Many of the Kitimat River Chum have finished spawning.      The size of this year's excellent Chum return is verified by the number of carcasses washing up along the shoreline.
Pink are also turning to spawning colours.  Coho numbers are excellent.  The instant flash of silver on the hook set is an exhilarating feeling!

Aug 16,17,18 Mike Herzberg reports, "Coho fishing in the river has been picking up. Hitting fish early in the drifts, then a few more as the tide fish make their way up. Nothing big yet, the largest have been around 10 lbs. Pink 1/2 oz. jig has been working best. Hottest plug has been the green hot-tail 25 hot shot. Last three drifts have been hooking up with 10-13 fish each time. Still the odd pink and chum, but they're not worth keeping, anymore. River is in great shape. Waiting for the big coho to begin showing up. Will be drifting again Thursday and Friday mornings. The guys in the photos are Pete, Kevin, and Mo".  Congratulations Mike and friends on some very impressive catch numbers!

Summary
Coho fishing on the Kitimat is better than normal for this time of year and will only get better.  This is excellent news for the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce who are hosting a Derby on the Labour Day weekend.  Anyone wishing to participate, please contact the Kitimat Chamber.  250 632 6294. Aug 14 to 19th  I had the pleasure of fishing with my son, Brandon, my friends Ron Jones and Jacqui Mancao from Hawaii, Graham Brady, Mary and Ferd Bouzane on board the Anna Christine.  We were treated to an incredible fishing experience and the unbelievable beauty of the Douglas Channel hosted by Captain Rick Rottluff and his daughter Kim.  Kim is a very pretty young lady who is developing excellent culinary skills and possesses a wonderful smile.   The trip was filled with fun, laughter, and fabulous fine dining.  Our compliments to Kim for preparing some of the most delicious meals imaginable.  When we weren’t dining or recovering from over eating, our Skipper put us onto some incredible fishing spots.  The key to success in fishing the Douglas Channel is to have a good Captain.   We had an excellent Captain and the proof is in the coolers.
We caught a ton of fish but it was the entire experience that was so memorable.  The spacious luxury of a 60' yacht that that sleeps up to 8 friends and relatives.  The whales and porpoises visiting almost daily. Fine dining on fresh Crab, Prawns and fish...right out of the water.  Anchoring in bays with water like glass and back drops of majestic rock faces.  Most of all,  the fun and laughter of good friends and family.
This is a fishing experience that every angler should experience with their closest friends and family once in a lifetime.  A huge Thank You to Captain Rick and Kim Rottluff for a page in our history book of life that we will never forget!
Anyone wishing to book a trip on the "Anna Christine", please contact Ron wakita@telus.net.

Summary

I am always amazed by the stock abundance and the breathtaking beauty of the Douglas Channel.

Halibut continues to be the shining star of this year's fishing season.  It has been one the best Halibut season's in some time and looks like it will continue.

Coho fishing is exceptional and a few larger Chinook are still being caught.  Smart money says. "Get out fishing while the fishing is Good!"

Thank You to everyone for submitting photos and info to this Fishing report.
